Understanding IP Ratings
Summary
Ingress Protection (IP) Ratings protect electrical products from being damaged by
outside contamination and people from hurting themselves. Knowing which IP Rating
you need will help you design control panels and machines that are safer and more
reliable. The amount of solids the device protects against (levels 1-6) determines the
number on the left of the chart, while the amount of liquid protection (levels 1-9) is on
the right. IEC and NEMA also have their own protection rating system for enclosed
electrical products. Two products may look the same on the outside, but when choosing
which product to go with, look for the one with the highest ratings.
